HOW TO WIRE AND INSTALL RECESSED LIGHTING FIXTURES SAFELY
-
HOW GFCI PROTECTION WORKS DOWNSTREAM AND HOW TO TEST IT PROPERLY
-
HOW TO APPLY NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE (NEC) CONCEPTS TO REAL INSTALLATIONS
-
HOW TO USE A MULTIMETER TO TEST CONTINUITY, VOLTAGE, POLARITY, AND SHORTS

DO-IT-YOURSELF
AND SAVE!
Hiring a licensed electrician to install or rewire three-way switches, recessed lighting, or GFCI-protected circuits typically costs $300–$600 per task, depending on access and complexity.
If you’re updating multiple switches, adding recessed lights, or correcting GFCI and wiring issues, project costs can quickly exceed $1,000–$2,000.
Learn how to wire, test, and troubleshoot these more advanced electrical tasks safely — and gain the confidence to know when a licensed electrician is still the right call.
Workshop Description
This hands-on workshop goes beyond basic wiring and into how electricians think, test, and troubleshoot electrical systems.
You’ll wire complete circuits, test them with a multimeter, identify potential problems, and observe how systems behave once energized—all under controlled, instructor-supervised conditions.
This class introduces live testing concepts (demonstrated by the instructor) while students practice proper testing and verification techniques prior to energization.
Level One Electrical Basics is required prior to registering for the Level Two workshop — this workshop includes live demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice using professional equipment.
By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:
-
Wire and test a three-way lighting circuit with confidence
-
Install and connect recessed light fixtures correctly
-
Wire a GFCI receptacle and protect downstream outlets
-
Identify and correct common wiring errors before power is restored
-
Use a multimeter to verify safe conditions and diagnose problems
-
Understand how breakers, GFCIs, and lighting respond to faults
-
Apply code concepts related to grounding, box fill, conductor size, and breaker selection
Hands-On Learning
Each participant will work at their own dedicated practice station, wiring and testing devices using real materials and professional methods.
You’ll learn to:
-
Pull and prepare cable properly
-
Terminate switches, outlets, and lighting fixtures
-
Identify traveler wires and neutral paths
-
Test circuits thoroughly before energizing
-
Interpret device behavior and troubleshoot issues
Safety First
Safety is non-negotiable. This workshop emphasizes the professional safety procedures electricians rely on every day, including:
-
Lockout/tagout demonstrations
-
Proper PPE and safe work habits
-
How to verify circuits are de-energized
-
How electricians test before and after energizing
All live power demonstrations are handled by the instructor after full safety verification.
Why Take This Class
Electrical problems don’t always announce themselves clearly. This workshop teaches you how to test, verify, and think through electrical work safely, so you know when a task is within your ability — and when it’s time to call a licensed electrician.
Level 1 builds foundational understanding of residential electrical systems; Level 2 advances those skills through hands-on wiring, testing, and real-world troubleshooting.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
My name is Alex Walsh
Hey, I’m Alex! I’m a lifelong Northern Virginia local who grew up in the electrical trade. I was wiring things with my family at Walsh Electric by the time I was ten, and it’s been a part of my life ever since. I’m a licensed electrician and have worked on projects that range from classified military installations all the way down to simple outlets and light switches. One of the biggest jobs I’ve tackled was a full renovation of 412 apartment units in Alexandria, which meant new services and brand-new electrical systems throughout.
These days, I’ve transitioned into doing more estimating and project planning. I spend a lot of time face-to-face with homeowners and business owners, and that daily interaction has taught me what the average person really needs to know about electricity to feel safe and confident in their own space.
When I’m not working, I’m usually hanging out with my wife, our three-year-old, our newborn, and 3 cats in Annandale — or sneaking in a movie or two (recent favorites have been A Touch of Zen and Sonatine). And when hockey season hits, you’ll probably find me watching the Washington Capitals like it’s a full-blown religion.
