Duration: 3 hours Skill Level: Beginner-Friendly Age Requirement: Must be 14+ Instructor: Alex Walsh Workshop Description: This hands-on workshop takes the mystery out of household electricity. You’ll learn what’s happening behind your switches and outlets, how to stay safe, and how to complete basic wiring tasks correctly. This workshop includes live demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice using professional equipment. By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to: - Understand the basics of electricity including voltage, current, resistance, and power, and how they apply in your home - Identify common household electrical issues such as phantom loads, shared neutrals, and loose connections, and know when to call a professional - Apply essential code concepts every homeowner should know, including GFCI and AFCI protection, box fill, grounding, bonding, and spacing requirements - Recognize and correctly identify common devices such as switches, outlets, GFCIs, dimmers, and LED fixtures - Wire a single-pole switch, a standard receptacle, and a GFCI with confidence - Safely use a digital multimeter to verify de-energized circuits, check continuity, and confirm polarity - Begin mapping your home’s electrical circuits to better understand and label your panel Hands-On Learning: Each participant will have their own practice bay to wire devices under instructor supervision. You’ll learn to: - Pull and prepare electrical cable - Wire outlets and switches properly - Bond grounds and secure connections - Label circuits and test your work safely Safety First Safety is a top priority. You’ll learn the same procedures used by professionals, including: - PPE and safe work habits - Lockout and tagout demonstrations - How to verify a circuit is de-energized before working - Take-Home Tools and Resources Each student receives: - A digital multimeter included with class fee - A pocket reference guide covering wire colors, GFCI and AFCI rules, device ratings, and a “When to Call an Electrician” checklist - A circuit mapping worksheet with panel labeling stickers Why Take This Class: Electricity powers your home, but understanding it helps you protect it. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE
EQUIPMENT

Your safety is always our priority. We provide all necessary PPE based on the type of work being performed, including items such as N95 masks, gloves, eye and ear protection, and protective aprons. Our instructors will guide you on proper safety practices throughout the class.

Participants work with real tools and materials used in the trades, providing hands-on experience that reflects real-world conditions. All tools and materials required for the workshop are included for use during the workshop.

FIRST AID &
SAFETY PREPAREDNESS

While safety is emphasized in every workshop, we are fully prepared should an accident occur. Our facility is equipped with first aid kits, two emergency eye wash stations, and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

SNACKS &
BEVERAGES

Hands-on work can build up an appetite, so we offer a small refreshment station with complimentary soda, water, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and individually packaged snacks.
